Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 13, 2026
Aurora Reader is built to be private by default. Your books and reading data live on your device. When you choose to sync, your data goes to your own Google Drive — not to us. This policy explains, in plain language, what data the app touches and why.
This document is a good-faith template describing how the app is designed to work. Review it with a qualified professional before publishing it as your official, legally binding policy.
The short version
- The app works fully offline. You don’t need an account to read.
- Your library, bookmarks, highlights, notes and settings are stored locally on your device.
- Optional cloud sync uses your Google Drive. We never receive or store your books.
- A few optional features call third-party services (dictionary, translation). These send only the word or passage you look up.
- We use privacy-respecting analytics and crash reporting to keep the app stable.
Data stored on your device
By default, everything stays on your phone or tablet:
- Imported book files and extracted covers
- Reading progress, bookmarks, highlights and notes
- Collections, reading goals, sessions and statistics
- Your app preferences and reading settings
This data never leaves your device unless you turn on a feature that requires it (such as sync).
Optional Google Drive sync (Premium)
If you enable sync, Aurora Reader uses Google Sign-In with the minimum scopes needed:
- An app-private folder (
appDataFolder) for your metadata — progress, bookmarks, highlights, notes and settings. This folder is hidden, managed by Google, and tied to your account. - A file scope limited to files the app creates, used only if you choose to sync your book files.
Your synced data is stored in your own Google Drive. Aurora Reader has no server that receives or retains your library. You can revoke access at any time from your Google Account settings, and delete the synced data from your Drive.
Third-party services
Some optional features contact external services, sending only what’s needed to fulfil your request:
| Feature | Service | Data sent |
|---|---|---|
| Dictionary lookup | A public dictionary API | The single word you look up |
| Translation | A public translation API | The short passage you translate |
| Free book catalogs (OPDS) | Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Feedbooks | Standard catalog requests |
| Purchases | Google Play Billing | Handled by Google; we don’t see your payment details |
| Sync | Google Drive | As described above |
We don’t sell your data, and we don’t build advertising profiles. Aurora Reader contains no ads.
Analytics & crash reporting
To understand stability and fix bugs, the app may use Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. These collect aggregated, app-usage and crash diagnostics (for example, which screen crashed and on what device model). They are not used to identify you personally or to track you across other apps. Where required, you’ll be asked for consent, and you can opt out in the app settings.
Permissions
The app requests only what features need — for example, storage access to import the books you choose, and notification access so background text-to-speech can show playback controls. You can manage permissions in Android settings.
Children’s privacy
Aurora Reader is a general-audience reading app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices & rights
- Read entirely offline with no account.
- Turn sync on or off at any time, and revoke Drive access from your Google Account.
- Opt out of analytics in settings.
- Delete your local data by clearing app data or uninstalling; delete synced data from your Drive.
Depending on where you live (for example, the EU/UK under GDPR, or California under CCPA/CPRA), you may have additional rights to access or delete your data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be noted with a new “Last updated” date on this page.
