What an AZW3 file is
AZW3, also called KF8, is Amazon’s successor to MOBI. It supports richer formatting (better fonts, styling and layout) while remaining reflowable, so the text still adapts to your screen and font size.
You will meet AZW3 in two situations: files exported from a personal library, and DRM-free copies distributed directly. Both are ordinary files and behave like any other ebook once opened.
Which AZW3 files open, and which do not
The format is not the deciding factor; the protection on the individual file is. An AZW3 without DRM opens in Aurora Reader immediately. An AZW3 with Amazon DRM is encrypted and will not open in a general-purpose reader.
This is a licensing boundary rather than a technical shortcoming, it applies to every third-party reader equally, and this page does not provide instructions for getting around it. If a book is locked to Kindle, the Kindle app is where it reads.

Opening an AZW3 file

Put the file on your phone
Download it, copy it over by USB, or pull it from a cloud folder. Nothing special is required.

Import it into the library
Use Import inside Aurora Reader, or tap the file and choose the app. Importing keeps the cover and your reading position.

Set it up once
Font, size, line spacing and theme carry across every book you open afterwards.
If an AZW3 file will not open
Work through these in order. The first two account for almost every case.

Check whether it is DRM-protected
If it came from a Kindle Store purchase, it almost certainly is, and no third-party reader will open it. That is the answer in most cases.

Check the extension is real
A file renamed to .azw3 is still whatever it was before. Re-download it from the original source if you are unsure.

Try re-importing
A download interrupted partway through produces a file that looks complete and is not. Importing again from a fresh copy resolves it.
Converting AZW3 to EPUB
A DRM-free AZW3 converts cleanly to EPUB with a desktop tool such as Calibre, and EPUB is the better long-term format to standardise on: it is an open standard, it is the best supported, and it is what most catalogs distribute.
Conversion does not and cannot strip DRM. If a file is protected, the conversion fails rather than producing a readable copy, and this page does not describe any way around that.
