What a PDF is good at
A PDF freezes a page exactly as it was designed: same fonts, same figures, same line breaks, on every device. When the layout carries meaning, that is precisely what you want.
Textbooks with equations and multi-column setting, sheet music, technical diagrams, comics and anything you might print all belong in PDF. Nothing shifts, and what you see is what the author laid out.
And where it struggles on a phone
The same fixed layout is why a PDF designed for A4 is awkward on a 6-inch screen. The reader can only shrink the whole page; it cannot re-break the lines, so raising the text size means zooming and panning rather than reflowing.
For a 300-page novel that gets tiring fast. If the same book exists as an EPUB, take the EPUB for phone reading and keep the PDF for the material where layout is the point.

Making a PDF more readable on a phone
A PDF cannot reflow, but a few habits make one much less painful on a small screen. None of these change the file; they change how you meet it.
- Turn the phone sideways. A landscape screen is close to the aspect ratio of half an A4 page, so a single column often fits without zooming.
- Prefer continuous scroll over page-by-page for text-heavy PDFs; you stop losing the thread at each page boundary.
- For a two-column academic paper, zoom to one column and scroll down it, then come back up. Fighting to read both columns at once is what makes papers exhausting on a phone.
- If the PDF is a scan rather than exported text, expect the worst results. There is no text layer to work with, and that is a property of the file.
When it is worth finding the EPUB instead
If a book exists in both formats and you will read it end to end on a phone, the EPUB is almost always the better copy. Desktop tools such as Calibre can also convert a DRM-free PDF to EPUB, though the result depends entirely on how the PDF was built: text exported from a word processor converts reasonably, while a scanned or heavily designed page usually does not survive.
Keep the PDF for the material where the layout carries the meaning. That is not a workaround; it is what each format is for.

Being straight about scope is more useful than a longer feature list. Aurora Reader is a reading app. It does not edit PDFs, does not sign them, does not fill in forms, and does not run OCR over scanned pages.
If you need any of those, use a document suite for that job and keep Aurora Reader for reading. A scanned PDF with no text layer will also read poorly here, because there is no text to work with. That is a property of the file, not the app.
