Plain text, made comfortable

TXT Reader for Android

A TXT file is the simplest ebook you can own, but opening one in a file viewer is a poor way to finish a novel. Aurora Reader turns plain text into a proper reading page with adjustable type, spacing, themes and a remembered position.

The Plain Text Library

The northern sky unfurled in slow ribbons of green and violet, and for a while she forgot the cold entirely.

She turned the page the way one turns a thought over, gently, unhurried, letting the light do its quiet work above the pines.

Somewhere far below, a single lamp glowed in a cabin window, the only warm thing for miles.

Why use a reader for a plain text file?

Android can display a TXT file, but a generic viewer treats it as a document to inspect rather than a book to live in. Long lines, a fixed typeface and no reliable reading position become tiring a few chapters in.

A dedicated reader wraps the same text to your screen, remembers the exact place you stopped and applies one comfortable set of reading controls across every file in your library.

What Aurora Reader adds without changing the file

The source remains plain text. The app changes only how it is presented while you read, so the original file stays portable and can still open anywhere.

Readable typography

Choose from seven fonts, set type from 12 to 32pt, and adjust line spacing and margins for a comfortable line length.

Ten reading themes

Use warm paper tones during the day, Dusk in low light or true-black AMOLED on an OLED screen.

Your place remembered

Return to the same position instead of searching through one long document every time.

Bookmarks and notes

Keep useful passages beside the rest of your reading library rather than in a separate text-file workflow.

Night controls

Combine a dark theme with the blue-light filter and in-app brightness for late reading.

One mixed-format shelf

Keep TXT beside EPUB, PDF, FB2, MOBI and AZW3 instead of using a different viewer for each format.

How to open a TXT file on Android

  1. 1

Put the file on your phone

Download it, copy it over USB, save an attachment or export it from another app.

  2. 2

    Open or import it

Tap the file and choose Aurora Reader, or use Import inside the app to add it permanently to your shelf.

  3. 3

    Set the page once

Choose a font, size, line spacing and theme. Those reading preferences carry over to the next book.

TXT is durable, but deliberately limited

Plain text has no cover, chapter navigation, embedded images, italics, footnotes or publisher typography. That simplicity makes it tiny and exceptionally durable, but it also means the reader cannot recover structure that is not in the file.

If the same book is available as EPUB, choose EPUB for its table of contents and semantic structure. Choose TXT when it is the only copy you have, when maximum portability matters, or when the content never needed formatting in the first place.

When text looks broken

A TXT file does not always declare its character encoding. Very old files may have been saved for a particular Windows code page, so accented letters or non-Latin scripts can appear as boxes or unexpected symbols.

If that happens, open the file on a computer and save a copy as UTF-8. That fixes the encoding rather than altering the words, and UTF-8 is the most portable choice for moving plain text between devices.

Frequently asked

Can Android open TXT files?

Yes, but a generic text viewer usually lacks book-oriented controls and a reliable saved reading position. Aurora Reader opens TXT as part of the same library as your other ebooks.

Is TXT support free in Aurora Reader?

Yes. TXT is one of the six formats in the free version, with no ads and no account required.

Can I change the font and background for a TXT file?

Yes. TXT uses the same font, size, spacing, margin, alignment and reading-theme controls as the other reflowable formats.

Why does my TXT file show strange characters?

The file was probably saved with an old or incorrectly detected character encoding. Saving a copy as UTF-8 on a computer is the most reliable fix.

Should I choose TXT or EPUB?

Choose EPUB when both are available because it preserves chapters, images and book structure. TXT is useful for maximum portability and for material that has no richer edition.
