MOBI support on Android
MOBI Reader for Android
MOBI is the older Amazon format, and files in it tend to surface from long-standing libraries and archives. Aurora Reader opens DRM-free MOBI files on Android and keeps them in the same shelf as everything else.
- DRM-free MOBI
- Same library as EPUB
- Works offline

Letters from the North
The northern sky unfurled in slow ribbons of green and violet, and for a while she forgot the cold entirely.
She turned the page the way one turns a thought over, gently, unhurried, letting the light do its quiet work above the pines.
Somewhere far below, a single lamp glowed in a cabin window, the only warm thing for miles.
What a MOBI file is
MOBI grew out of the Mobipocket format and became one of the early standards on Amazon’s Kindle. Like EPUB it is reflowable: it stores structured text rather than fixed pages, so it adapts to your screen.
Amazon has since moved on, first to AZW3 and then further. MOBI handles modern styling noticeably worse than EPUB, which is why you meet it mostly in older collections and conversion output rather than in anything published today.
Opening a MOBI file in Aurora Reader
- 1
Get the file onto your phone
A browser download, an email attachment, a cloud folder, or a USB copy from a computer all work. A MOBI is just a file.
- 2
Open it or import it
Tap the file and pick Aurora Reader, or use Import inside the app to add it to the library so it keeps your place and cover.
- 3
Read it like any other book
Themes, fonts, spacing, highlights, notes and bookmarks all behave the same as they do for EPUB.
DRM-protected Kindle purchases
This is the part worth being clear about. A book bought from the Kindle Store is normally wrapped in DRM, and an encrypted file will not open in a third-party reader. That applies to Aurora Reader as it does to any other general-purpose app.
It is not a missing feature or a setting to switch on, and this page does not offer a way around it. If a title is locked to Kindle, read it in the Kindle app. DRM-free MOBI files open here immediately.
- DRM-free MOBI: opens in Aurora Reader
- Kindle Store purchase with DRM: does not open in any third-party reader
- Not sure which you have? If it came from a public-domain library or a direct author download, it is almost certainly DRM-free
Where MOBI files come from
Knowing the source usually tells you whether a file will open before you try it.
- Personal archives and backups from long-running libraries, which are typically DRM-free
- Output from desktop conversion tools such as Calibre, which is always DRM-free
- Older public-domain downloads, from an era when Project Gutenberg offered MOBI alongside EPUB
- Kindle Store purchases, which are normally DRM-protected and will not open here
Converting MOBI to EPUB
If you would rather standardise on one format, a desktop tool such as Calibre converts DRM-free MOBI to EPUB in a few clicks, and the result generally reads better because EPUB handles modern styling more reliably.
Two honest caveats. Conversion cannot remove DRM: a protected file stays protected no matter what format you aim at, and the conversion will simply fail. And complex layouts can shift during conversion, so check a chapter before deleting the original.
MOBI, AZW3 or EPUB?
If you have a choice of format for the same book, the ranking for phone reading is straightforward.
| Format | Status | Take it when |
|---|---|---|
| EPUB | Current open standard | Almost always: best support and typography |
| AZW3 | Newer Amazon format | It is the DRM-free copy you already have |
| MOBI | Legacy, largely superseded | It is what the archive offers, or the file is already yours |
Aurora Reader is free on Android 8.0 and up, with no ads and no account. Premium is a single one-time purchase with a 7-day free trial.

Frequently asked
What is a MOBI file?
A reflowable ebook format that grew out of Mobipocket and became an early Kindle standard. It stores structured text rather than fixed pages, so it adapts to your screen, but it handles modern styling worse than EPUB and has largely been superseded.
Can Aurora Reader open MOBI on Android?
Yes, for DRM-free MOBI files, in the free version and in the same library as your other formats.
Will DRM-protected MOBI books work?
No. A DRM-protected file bought from the Kindle Store is encrypted and will not open in Aurora Reader or any other third-party reader. Those titles have to be read in the app they are licensed to.
Is EPUB newer than MOBI?
EPUB is the current open standard and is better supported and better at modern formatting. If the same book is available as both, take the EPUB.
