How to Transfer Ebooks from a Computer to Android

The most reliable way to transfer many ebooks is USB: connect the phone, choose File transfer, copy the books into a Books folder, then import them with your reader. For a few files, Google Drive or another cloud service is usually faster.

Do not convert a book merely to move it. EPUB, PDF, FB2, MOBI, AZW3 and TXT are ordinary files when they are not locked by DRM.

USB transfer

  1. Connect the unlocked Android phone to the computer with a data-capable cable.
  2. Tap the USB notification on the phone.
  3. Select File transfer or MTP, not charging only.
  4. On the computer, open the phone’s shared internal storage.
  5. Create a folder named Books and copy the files into it.
  6. Eject the phone, open your reader and import from Books.

Windows normally shows the phone in File Explorer. macOS may need a compatible Android file-transfer utility. Linux desktop support varies, but MTP is available in common file managers.

If the computer cannot see the phone

Try another cable before changing software; many USB cables carry power but no data. Keep the phone unlocked, choose File transfer again and use a direct computer port rather than an unpowered hub.

If corporate device policy blocks USB storage, use a permitted cloud folder instead of trying to bypass the restriction.

Cloud transfer

Upload the books from the computer to Google Drive, Dropbox or another service. On Android, open the cloud app and download or share each file to the reader. The detailed Drive workflow is in how to import ebooks from Google Drive.

Cloud transfer is convenient but creates more possible copies: one on the computer, one in cloud storage, one in Downloads and perhaps one in the reader. Decide which copy is the backup before deleting anything.

Transfer a large library in batches

Copy 20 to 50 books first and import them. Check titles, authors, covers and several files before moving the rest. A single damaged or unsupported file is easier to identify in a small batch.

Keep folder names simple and avoid deeply nested archives. Extract ZIP or RAR files on the computer; a compressed collection is not itself an ebook.

What DRM changes

Copying a protected Kindle, Kobo or Adobe book does not make it portable. Encryption remains attached to the file, so use the authorized store application. Aurora Reader supports compatible DRM-free files and does not remove protection.

Verify the transfer

After import, disconnect the computer and put the phone in airplane mode. Open several books and turn a few pages. This confirms that the reader is using a local copy rather than a cloud preview.
