How to Tell If an Ebook File Is Corrupted

An ebook is likely corrupted when multiple compatible readers reject it, the file is unexpectedly small, the download never completed, or chapters and images fail consistently. One app failing is not enough to prove corruption: the format may be unsupported or protected by DRM.

Diagnose in this order

  1. Confirm the real extension.
  2. Check that the download completed.
  3. Verify that the reader supports the format.
  4. Consider DRM or a required password.
  5. Test a fresh copy from the legitimate source.

This order avoids “repairing” a file that is merely being opened with the wrong application.

Signs of an incomplete download

Temporary extensions such as .part, .download and .crdownload indicate an unfinished transfer. A finished filename can still be truncated if the connection failed at the final step. Compare its size with the source when that information is available.

A novel-sized EPUB that contains only a few kilobytes may actually be an error page saved under the wrong name. Open the download page again rather than renaming the file.

Corruption, DRM and unsupported formats

SymptomMore likely cause
Every reader reports an invalid archiveDamaged or incomplete EPUB
Official store app opens it, general readers do notDRM
File ends in .acsmAdobe authorization ticket, not an ebook
PDF asks for a passwordValid encrypted PDF
One reader fails and another opens itCompatibility or parser difference

Aurora Reader opens DRM-free EPUB, PDF, FB2, MOBI, AZW3 and TXT. It does not remove DRM, guess passwords or repair arbitrary damaged archives.

Safe recovery

Keep the original until a replacement works. Download the book again from the publisher, store, library or backup. Avoid anonymous “ebook repair” websites for copyrighted or private documents because uploading the file gives a third party a copy.

For a DRM-free EPUB you own, an archive test on a computer can confirm whether the ZIP container is readable. That does not prove the internal book structure is valid, and manually editing the package can create new errors. Prefer a fresh publisher copy.

Partial display problems

A book that opens but loses one image or style may be malformed rather than fully corrupted. Check another chapter and another compatible reader. Complex fixed-layout files can expose implementation differences even when the container is valid.

For MOBI and AZW3, converting a copy may help only when the source is DRM-free and structurally readable. Conversion cannot restore bytes that were never downloaded.

After replacement

Import the verified copy and compare title, chapters and final page. Do not delete the previous entry until you have checked whether its notes or progress need to be preserved.

If the problem is specifically an Adobe .acsm download, read why ACSM is not EPUB. For storage and unfinished-download locations, see where ebook files are stored on Android.
