Why PDF Text-to-Speech Is Not Working on Android
Text-to-speech cannot read a PDF when the pages contain only images and no text layer. First try selecting or copying one sentence. If selection is impossible, the document probably needs optical character recognition, or OCR, before any reading app can speak it reliably.
If text is selectable, check the PDF’s permissions, language, reading order and Android voice settings.
Test the text layer
Zoom into a paragraph and press on a word.
- If individual words can be selected, the PDF has a text layer.
- If Android selects the whole page as an image, it is probably a scan.
- If selection works but produces random characters, the embedded text mapping is broken.
A page can look perfectly sharp while containing no machine-readable text. Visual quality and text accessibility are separate.
What OCR does
OCR analyzes page images and creates a text layer. Use a reputable OCR tool that supports the document’s language, then save a new copy and verify it carefully. Names, tables, equations, columns and footnotes are common recognition errors.
Aurora Reader does not perform OCR. It can read compatible text after that text exists; it cannot infer reliable words from pixels during playback.
If the PDF already has text
Check these items:
- In Android Settings, open Text-to-speech output.
- Choose an installed engine and the correct language.
- Download the voice if offline use is required.
- Test the system’s sample speech.
- Return to the reader and lower the speed temporarily.
- Try a short, simple PDF to separate a document problem from an engine problem.
Menu names vary by phone maker and Android version.
Reading order can still be wrong
PDF stores positioned objects, not always a logical stream of sentences. A two-column article may be spoken across both columns, while a footer interrupts a paragraph. OCR does not automatically fix poor reading order.
When the publisher offers an EPUB edition, use it for continuous text. EPUB contains semantic structure and usually works better with text-to-speech. Keep PDF when exact pages, figures or equations matter.
Other causes
Copying is restricted. Some PDFs set document permissions that prevent text extraction. Use the authorized source or ask the owner for an accessible edition.
The voice uses the wrong language. Install the matching language pack instead of forcing one voice to pronounce another language.
The PDF is very large. Image-heavy scans can exhaust memory. Close other apps and use an optimized edition from the publisher when available.
The app reads EPUB but not this PDF. That points to the PDF’s text layer or structure, not necessarily to the speech engine.
The PDF reader page states Aurora Reader’s reading scope and OCR limitation. For general voice setup, see how to listen to ebooks with text-to-speech, and compare EPUB versus PDF before converting anything.
